When you travel to Israel you will most likely be inundated in history. Drive past the field where David slew Goliath, the stream where Jesus was baptized, or Masada, site of the end of the First Jewish-Roman War.
In 66 CE, tensions between Jews and Greeks were high. There were anti-taxation protests and assaults on Roman soldiers. The pro-Roman King Agrippa II fled to Galilee fearing what was to come, and the Romans summoned Cestius Gallus, legate of Syria, to bring a batallion to Jerusalem. But when the battalion was conquered by the Jewish army, the Romans were shocked.
Meanwhile Nero was deposed and a new emperor, Galba, was installed and killed four months later. When Titus Flavius arrived in Jerusalem, his troops were able to siege the city by breaking down its weak third wall. They destroyed the second temple and the 600,00o inhabitants fought him tooth and nail.
Masada was the last Jewish stronghold and was taken by the Romans a few years later, in 73. But when they got inside, 960 of the 967 had committed suicide.
All of this history is at your fingertips when you travel to Israel. As such, it’s great to be able to call your friends with an Israel cell phone rental and tell them that you’re standing at the Western Wall or the place where Jews proved their faith and strength by sacrificing themselves.
